This work was inspired by archaeological excavation. I find beauty in the visual patterns created by such excavations and also in the concept of unearthing mysterious and interesting things that provide a window into the past. The symbols are mainly Neolithic, although many are found globally in ancient and indigenous art. They are a reference to the hidden information, which is all around us and especially beneath our feet. Although not intentional, the palette and construction of this image seems to have given it a futuristic component resulting in the suggested title: Map for Future Civilizations Showing Burial Mounds Where the Remains of Angels and Astronauts Were Recovered.
I have always experienced a deep longing to connect with something ancient and enduring and have found that art is the portal by which I could attempt to do so. As an approach to the beautiful and the mysterious, art provides a path for exploring our common Human Heritage. It communicates beyond words, and points toward that which is eternal and unknowable. Ancient art, objects and symbols inspire me. Responding to them in a simple human context, I attempt to present them in new and harmonious ways. I am especially drawn to symbols that have occurred repeatedly over long periods of time and in multiple contexts.
