Artist's Description

This image is inspired by unique drylands in Western Kansas and in coastal Peru. The landscape in Kansas, seen from the air, has a surreal extraterrestrial quality. The extreme desert conditions in coastal Peru allow farming only along the drainages, where from the air, the cultivated patches appear as jewels or charms hanging on the sinuous ribbons of the stream beds.

Here the earth is golden
Flat to gently rolling
An ocean of soil
Wild and windblown
Gives way to cultivation
With deep furrows
That worry for rain.

Here the earth is reaching
Out to the horizon.
The sea of land
Silent and extending
Curves away to an evening sky
Alive with vibrant color
And a visiting moon
